Jesus, True Son of God and Man

Summary: Luke presents the genealogy of Jesus. His purpose in doing this is to show that Jesus, fully God and man, is the new Adam who has come to bring salvation to all. In v. 22 and in the previous chapters 1-3 of the infancy narrative , Luke presents Jesus as fully God. Luke also shows that Jesus is fully man. He teaches us that Jesus will fulfill both the Abrahamic and Davidic covenants (vv. 31, 34), shows Jesus's royal lineage and bloodline to the throne of David (v. 31), it avoids the curse of Jechoniah (Jeremiah 22:30), and shows Jesus is for all mankind (v. 38). Finally by going all the way back to Adam, who is a son of God, we learn how Jesus is the new Adam (Romans 5:14), the Son of God who has come to redeem people from every tribe, people, tongue, and nation.
