Gavin says, "In this 3rd of 8 sermons … 1stly the specificity of sins in Biblical passages dealing with eternal torment in hell" & "praying for & giving donations to Anglicare as … acts of Christian charity … fruits … in Matthew 25:35,36." "2ndly, 2 diverse views of soul annihilation in hell & eternal torment in hell, as historically argued as the only 2 possibilities, in which advocates for these 2 views read down the others proof texts on the basis of their proof texts. 3rdly the origins of the concept of an intrinsically 'immortal soul' as opposed to an intrinsically 'mortal soul' …, & the origins of the concept of an intrinsically 'immortal soul' found to originate not in the Holy Bible, but in heathenism. 4thly, … Anglican confessional documents do not claim that a man has an intrinsically 'immortal soul;' & … the issue of eternal torment in hell in the Books of Homilies in the 39 Articles. Likewise … Lutheran confessional documents do not claim that a man has an intrinsically 'immortal soul;' although they do claim universal eternal torment in hell. 5thly … both Roman Catholic & Puritan confessional documents claim that man has an intrinsically 'immortal soul.' 6thly, … Protestant orthodoxy on soul issues allows diversity of view between the Anglican & Lutheran view of an intrinsically 'mortal soul,' & the Puritan view of an intrinsically 'immortal soul.' And 7thly, my view that man has an intrinsically 'mortal soul,' that there are degrees of punishment in hell, & that at the lower end is soul annihilation, which therefore is the sentence given to unsaved 'children … dying before they' are old enough to 'commit actual sin,' … & at the upper end is eternal torment."
