Poimenics (1st lecture)

This course aims to equip the student to understand and practice the coherence of poimenics (the art of shepherding the flock of God) and homiletics (the art of preaching to the flock of God). Poimenics is the discipline of study that treats of the pastoral contact between minister (and other office bearers) and church members. Practically speaking, this discipline usually confines itself to the personal contact between minister and members (visitation, counseling, coaching, etc.). However, Scripture shows how the framework of ministerial work is one of poimenics, or shepherding (e.g. 1 Pet 5:1-5). Since, the chief work of a shepherd is preaching, it may be asked to what extent preaching can and should intersect with poimenics. This course argues the coherence of preaching and shepherding, the primacy of preaching in shepherding, and the concretization of preaching in shepherding.
