Mt. Hebron, The Mount of the Sphere of Life_11-PT1 Mount Hebron, or the Hebron hills are a mountain ridge, comprising the bulk of the central Judean Mountains. Hebron is the tensest city in the West Bank. Judaism ranks Hebron the second-holiest city after Jerusalem, while some Muslims regard it as one of the four holy cities. One of the most ancient and important cities in Southern Palestine, now known to the Moslems as el Khalil ( "the friend of the Merciful," of God, a favorite name for Abraham; compare James 2:23). It is 20 miles South of Jerusalem, situated in an open valley, 3,040 ft. above sea-level. Hebron is said to have been passed before Zoan in Egypt (Numbers 13:22); its ancient name was Kiriath-arba, probably meaning the "Four Cities," perhaps because divided at one time into four quarters.
