The only command from verse 17 to the end of the chapter is in verse 17 – follow godly examples. We need examples to enable us to get the hang of the Christian life. (And this will help our unity in the church.) The rest is reasons. Reason #1 (vv.18-19) is that failure to get the hang of the Christian life has led many to a lifestyle that ends in destruction.
