God’s Sovereign Providential Care

Among the more perplexing elements of the Christian life is how we ought to understand the day-to-day ups and downs of ordinary life. Sometimes, it can seem that there is no purpose or reason behind those events. If we have a sense of the providential working of God, we may be tempted to ask if we can even know what the meaning is of any event in our lives? When we consider such things, we can be assured from the Scriptures of at least two things: 1) It is certain that the providential working of God is often mysterious even if we think we know His purposes and misperceive that purpose and, 2) That the Lord who has called us does indeed have a purpose in the events in our lives even if we do not understand that purpose in every particular. Does the mystery of providence cancel out the comfort we ought to have, or is there comfort even in the midst of mysterious providences? Our text today describes the kind of comfort we ought to have and that comfort is based upon the promise of ultimate good even in hard times. – Pastor Schlegel
