Rend Your Heart and Not Your Garments

The theme of Joel's prophecy is the “day of the LORD”.
What can a sinner do in a time like this? We see the answer in Joel 2:13 –“And rend your heart, and not your garments.” This signifies genuine repentance. To repent means, “to change your mind.”

True repentance has three elements:

1. CONTRITION.
   Ezek. 18:27-32; Psalm 51:17; Acts 2:38.

2. CONFESSION.
   Mark 1:5; 1 John 1:9; Luke 19:8.

3. CONDUCT.
   1 Thess. 1:9; Zech. 1:3; Joel 2:12.

“For the day of the LORD is great and very terrible; and who can abide it?”
Joel 2:11.
