2Sam022 Deliverance and Conquest

148

Toward the end of his kingship, David looked back over his career in public office and composed this poetic meditation upon the power of God displayed in delivering David from distress and enabling David to conquer his enemies. David not only exalts God's name for delivering him from his distress, he provides a theological rationale for divine deliverance in order to show all believers how the invisible hand of the Lord is quietly yet powerful delivering his people from their situations of peril. As the poem concludes, David provides a snapshot of the expansion of the kingdom in his day which simultaneously provides a glimpse of the future expansion of Christ's mediatorial kingdom throughout the earth under the new covenant.
