Revelation Lesson #074

MAKE MERRY AND SEND GIFTS: Revelation paints a vivid picture of a world rejoicing at the death of the Two Witnesses. Interestingly, the verse describes a communitywide exchange of gifts and making merry, likened to a Christmas-like celebration. These responses highlight the world's perverse delight in ignoring or silencing God's truths.
The word "merry" signifies joy, happiness, and celebration. In the context of this verse, however, it takes on a darker, more ironic tone. The merriment is not genuine joy arising from something positive or virtuous; instead, it's a perverse form of happiness stemming from the silencing of God's messengers, the Two Witnesses. This twisted merriment is a grim mirror reflecting the state of the world's collective conscience at that time, revealing how far people have strayed from spiritual truths.
This is an example of how what brings "joy" to some may be an occasion of disgust in God's eyes. The world finds its merriment in removing divine correction, further emphasizing the spiritual depravity present. The word "merry" serves as an emblem of humanity's rebellion against God, marking a moment when people are pleased with the absence of divine intervention and conviction. Christ is the only time most people default to the word "Merry" in a greeting. Happy is the customary expression in all the other holidays.
