Nahum, Exposition # 2 of 2

THIS SERIES IS NOW COMPLETE. Nahum is a vivid prediction of the downfall of Assyrian capital city, Nineveh. Assyrians had become extremely brutal in their conquests. Nahum's purpose in writing was to comfort his people, who had long been harassed by Assyria in terrible, bitter, and wicked ways. The practical application of Nineveh is that sinners can be expected to sin, but that God is just, and not mocked, and judgment will come to the wicked. Nahum is the seventh book of the ‘Minor Prophets of the Old Testament,' and these, as a rule, are not minor as in being less important than Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, and Daniel (ones known as the ‘Major Prophets'), but minor in the quantity of their content—though Hosea & Zechariah are exceptions. The Hebrew Bible puts the books of these twelve prophets together, simply calling them ‘The Twelve.' In each of the books of the Minor Prophets, we find the historical, the prophetical, and the practical—how it applies to us. Ingratitude, injustice, dishonesty, idolatry and immorality are all reprimanded by Nahum. There are applications for Christian living throughout this rich study.
