Amos, Socialism, and America

In denouncing the rich and protecting the poor, the prophet Amos does not promote socialism. His vision of social justice involves retribution more than distribution. Applying his political critique of northern Israel to America today requires principles and careful application. In this final session, we seek this wisdom from God. Please note: It was intended that the 1619 story of America be coupled with the 1620 story of America as the land of refugees from England, Cuba, Southeast Asia (the Hmong and Karen), and Armenia (to a land of "a thousand tomorrows"), but this version of the story was mistakenly omitted. Just as the African slaves are a large part of the American story, so also are "your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free" (Emma Lazarus' poem on the Statue of Liberty).
