Praying in Jesus' Name
Series Gospel of John series
In this passage Jesus is introducing his disciples to a soon-coming new situation, a "new normal." He will no longer be with them in his physical presence in order to answer their questions and requests. But in "that day," i.e., after his death, resurrection, and ascension, they should ask the Father for what they need, and they should ask him in "Jesus' name," i.e., based upon Christ's divine person and redemptive work. Jesus tells his disciples to be profuse in their requests, to put no limits on their requests - but they must be done in relation to Christ and in conformity to his Word, his will, and his character. Nor should we be timid or hesitant to ask the Father to meet unlimited needs, as long as we pray within the parameters of Jesus' name.
