The Prophets According to Peter
Series Thus Saith the Lord
Revering the Prophetic Word
When you examine the lives of the prophets they can sometimes seem superhuman as in the case of Elijah. Other cases may not be quite as sterling as in the case of Jonah and his notorious inhumane attitude toward the Ninevites. Whatever their individual case may have been, God’s prophets were endowed with special gifts of service to Him and His people – most notably the prophetic voice. They were heralds of God’s Word. While it is appropriate, along with all the saints through history, to have reverence for the prophets, it is their prophetic utterance that awards them great esteem beyond themselves because those utterances are the very Word of God: Thus saith the Lord! As we are somewhere in the middle of our survey of the prophets we take a little interlude to examine what the apostle Peter had to write about the prophets. You may not be surprised but you will certainly be blessed to discover the part they played in bringing the Gospel of Jesus Christ as we know it, as well as the riches of grace that come to those who believe in the Christ of the Gospel that they preached!
