A Double-Minded Man

Some approach God uncertain that He hears, or if He cares---wondering if the whole business of prayer isn't just a royal waste of time, but choosing to 'go through the motions' anyway. James says, such people are right. For them, the whole business IS a royal waste of time. 'Let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord.' The double-minded man says: 'I THINK the Bible is true, but what if it isn't?' 'I BELIEVE God loves me, but maybe He doesn't?' 'Is Jesus really the ONLY way to God?' 'I know the Bible says I shouldn't divorce my spouse, but don't I have a right to be happy?' 'Technically, it's not stealing, I'm just not reporting all my income.' I believe the American church is full of double-minded men and women, for two basic reasons. First, apostasy has undermined the faith of so many believers. A wolf in shepherd's clothing, giving carefully worded homilies on such topics as 'The Majesty of the Human Spirit,' 'The Divine Life-Force Within all Mankind,' and 'The Evil of Exclusivity' eventually begins to chip away at the faith of his hearers. But even 3/4 of those who claim to be born again have adopted unbiblical views, according to pollsters. Believing, for example, that 'people are basically good,' despite the fact that God's Word is very clear: Since the fall, people are basically sinful. Hence the second reason: conformity to this world, and its worldviews which has caused even evangelical Christians to think and behave as waves of the sea, driven by outside forces, without any inner power of direction. One worshiper said this was the best sermon she has heard. I know what you're thinking. No, this wasn't her first sermon.
