Sanctification is simply being set apart for a holy use unto the Lord. Sanctification begins in eternity when God separates some unto His Son to be their Surety. His sheep are separated again in the death of Christ and in their regeneration, and at the end in the first resurrection. However, God works sanctification in the life of the believer in this life.
