Sermon Outline:

Introduction

• A license to Sin? (Galatians 5:13; 2 Peter 2:12-17)

• Sin Crucified, Cannot Practice Sin (Romans 6)

• Review of 1 John 3:4-7

I. To Commit Sin is to Commit Lawlessness (v. 4)

• Lawlessness

• A distinction Must be Made between Lawlessness and the unintentional sin from time to time

II. Two Reasons the True Believer Cannot Practice Sin or Lawlessness (vs. 5-10)

A. Christ was Manifested to Take Away our Sins

• Died to Sin to Serve Righteousness
• No Sin in Christ/the True Believer Does not Sin
• Let No One Deceive You in Thinking that it is Okay to Practice Sin/Practice Lawlessness

B. Christ was Manifest to Destroy the Works of the Devil (vs. 8-10)

• What Does it Mean to be “of the Devil”? (v. 8a; Matt. 13:38; Ephesians 2:2; John 17:12; Psalm 51:5; John 8:44; Heidelberg Catechism #86; Matthew 7:17-18)

• In What Way has Christ Destroyed the Works of the Devil? (v. 8b; Gen. 3:15; Mark 1:24; Colossians 2:15; Hebrews 2:14-15)

• The True Believer “Cannot Sin,” which is Evidenced in Two Ways (vs. 9-10; Matthew 7:17-18; John 13:35)

Conclusion and Application

• Are you a Well Without Water (2 Peter 2:17;
• Repent of Your Sins (Galatians 5:16-17; Romans 7:20), and by Faith Amend Your Live by the Renewing of Your Mind (Romans 12:2)
