God surprises us -- he declares that Jesus is his beloved Son, and sends him into the wilderness to be tempted and famished. By this we understand that God disciplines us, because the devil hates us, and tempts us, and tempts us to think our identity is found in our feelings and temptations. But Jesus shows us to live by the Word of God instead.
