Colossians 3:8-11 - Put Off All These (Anger to Evil Speech)

As Paul continues to instruct the Colossians how to live this life of Christ, after exhorting them to put to death the initial list of five vices, he then tells them to put off a second list of five vices. This second list of vices moves from the internal, sinful, angry heart to the external sins of evil speaking and lying--which are harmful to the brethren.

This second list of vices is connected to the first in that both lists result from a discontented, covetous heart. We are to put off these sins by removing them all (like filthy clothes); remembering who we are in Christ (those clothes no longer fit) and how we are renewed in Him; by remembering who our brethren are (they, too, are in Christ and must be loved accordingly).
