The field of apologetics is the study of Christianity with the specific intent to 'defend' the Scriptures and faith in Christ as being reliable. The two main classifications are “evidentialists” and presuppositionalists.” John takes an apologetic approach in today's text. He testifies to the Biblical accuracy of Christ's life as well as the relevancy of His death.

I. The Consequences of Faith (5:1-5)

II. The Confidence of Faith (5:6-12)

When they were translating the Bible into the Inuit language they had great difficulty finding a word for “believe.” But early in the winter when the ice was becoming thick enough to walk on, the translator saw a young man step out on the ice and bounced a little to see if it would hold him. The translator asked what he called walking on the ice - he had found his word – to place one's whole weight or life to something. This is what it means to believe in Jesus. It is more than mental assent it is to place the weight of your life to Him.
