The Purpose of Life
Series Series in Philippians (2007-8)
17
Aim: To celebrate Christ, the purpose of life.
Doctrine: Christ is the goal of all creation's reason for being. Without Jesus, all is unformed and void; with Jesus, everything has redemptive value.
Exegesis: How Christ ennobles the lives of His churchmen: even our hardships are accompanied with purposeful hope (vv. 19-20a); even our living and dying is accompanied with real meaning (v. 20b); even our worst-case scenarios are accompanied with a living Christ (v. 21).
Further application: How to enjoy the purpose of life: place all my faith and hope in Jesus (alone), and resign all my dreams and aspirations to Jesus (alone).
Key verse: v. 21 ''For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.''
