A Sermon on Sexual Immorality

157

The words 'sexual immorality' are repeated often in the pages of scripture. Nearly every writer of the New Testament makes reference to the sin of sexual immorality. Have you ever considered how strange those words must have seemed to the majority culture of the Roman Empire?

They knew something of shame and honour, but the thought that there was a 'moral' or 'immoral' element to sex wasn't part of the Roman vocabulary. In fact, the church must have seemed extraordinarily 'prudish' in their insistence that all sex outside of that between husband and wife was sin.

The culture of the 21st Century has reverted to a 'neo-pagan' approach to sexuality, and has a similar reaction to the Christian teaching about sex. In fact, some churches have abandoned the historic positions of Christianity in order to seem more relevant. Scripture however would call us to see that sex is never just about our bodies, it is a 'whole-soul' activity that cannot be treated with indifference.
