Lord's Day #37 - Honoring God's Name in Our Words
Series Heidelberg Catechism

Lord's Day 37
Q. But may we not swear by the Name of God in a godly manner?
A. Yes; when the magistrate demands it of his subjects, or when otherwise necessity requires us thus to confirm fidelity and truth, for the glory of God and the welfare of our neighbor; for such swearing is grounded in God's Word, and therefore was rightly used by the saints in the Old and the New Testament.Q. May we also swear by saints or any other creatures?
A. No; for a lawful oath is a calling upon God, as the only Searcher of hearts, to bear witness to the truth, and to punish me if I swear falsely; which honor is due to no creature.
