Jesus Calms the Wind and Sea

As we prayed this morning for the poor people in the path of Hurricane Irma in Florida, thoughts of our Lord Jesus calming the wave and the wind come to mind.

How hard it is for the saints to grasp the mighty power of Jesus to save! His miracle power is so outside our normal daily comprehension that we are almost dumb to that power.

When the disciples found themselves tossed by a violent sea, they must have thought that perhaps the Savior could help them, for they woke Him from His sleep.

The real question wasn't whether Jesus could rescue the ship, but whether Jesus could do so while He was asleep?

Surely He couldn't, for how could He know their danger? How foolishly they limited Christ's power based upon such beggarly considerations!

And then they were astounded to find that the wind and sea obeyed His voice!

Over and over the Savior showed His power over the elements and nature and demons and sickness. He healed the sick, and restored blind eyes.

Always there was a limit beyond which, His people thought, even He could not help. He could heal Jairus' daughter, but now she was dead, and what could Jesus do?

Few seemed to grasp Christ's complete authority over the creation except the centurion. He knew Jesus had the authority to command the creation, and that it had to obey His command.

Christ's power was in keeping with the fact that He created the world, and holds it together by the fiat of His Word!

But we must squarely fact this truth: that all these exploits of Jesus were nothing next to His mighty power to forgive sin and remit the punishment of death!

That power cost Him His death at Calvary, saving His people from their sin!
