Life from the Dead, Part 1

We are used to thinking of Genesis 22 as the “resurrection” chapter: There is a sense in which Abraham receives Isaac back from the dead in Genesis 22.

But before we get there, we need to see first that the birth of Isaac is only because of the resurrection of Sarah – or to put it perhaps more accurately, the re-fructification of her womb.

Now there is a word you don't hear too often! Fructification has to do with bearing fruit. Sarah's womb was barren and empty. She was fruitless. Her womb was a barren wasteland – tohu vbohu.

But our God is a God who not only brings life to the dead, he brings life through death. It was only through the death of Sarah's womb – only through the long, painful years of barrenness – that God would bring life not only to the dead, but from the dead.
