The Sufficiency of an Alliance with God
Series Isaiah
30
The crisis in Isaiah's day after the death of king Ahaz, who had made Judah a vassal of Assyria. Diplomatic overtures had arrived from Philistia suggesting Judah form an alliance with Philistia (and maybe Egypt) against Assyria. What were they going to say to these messengers? Isaiah's answer is clear! The Lord had founded Zion. They were in a covenant alliance with him. That was quite sufficient! This can be applied to the overtures made to Reformed Christians and Churches to enter alliances with ideologies which would prove detrimental to the gospel. This includes re-definitions of core elements of the gospel (such as sin, or propitiatory atonement) resulting in a loss of balance or even denial of important doctrinal emphases.
