Romans 1.1.
Our word SERMON is from the Latin meaning 'to deliver a reasoned verbal address'. The BIBLE EXPOSITION follows the Scripture text and seeks to make plain the meaning and significance.
THE EPISTLE TO THE ROMANS has proved to be a letter that results in the reformation of lives, churches and nations. It was so with Martin Luther.
Paul's Jewish name is associated his with persecuting the Christianity. (Acts 8.3) Paul's Roman name is associated with his precedence as a preacher of the Gospel. (Acts 13.6-13). There was no self-promotion arising from pride. The greatest of men accepted the description 'servant'. 'Jesus' points by its etymology to the saving effect of Christ's work (Matthew 1.21). The name 'Christ' points to the Saviour's anointing. His position is official as Prophet, King and Priest. (Hebrews 5.5-6). LESSON. Christians have one Master, not self but Jesus Christ.
Paul's position was also official.
A. Paul was called. He took nothing upon himself. It was intended to be so with the Jewish priesthood. See (Hebrews 5.1-4)
B. Paul occupied the office of apostle. Apostle means 'one sent', a delegate; specifically an ambassador of the Gospel. It was distinctive of an apostle that he lived in the time of Christ, had seen the risen Lord, was inspired and was gifted to work miracles. See Acts 1.21-22,
C. Paul was separated unto the Gospel of God. Not only does the preacher's call bestow authority. His message is authoritative. It is not of men but of God. How could we, otherwise, receive such a message with confidence.
