Preaching vs. Teaching

In the pastor's pulpit ministry, what should be primary: preaching or teaching? In some circles, the role of Bible teaching is downplayed with the belief that "teaching" merely satisfies intellectual curiosity, whereas "preaching" promotes true spiritual growth. But, what does the Bible itself say about the roles of preaching and teaching in the pastor's ministry? You may also find it helpful to note that in the follow-up sermon on preaching vs. teaching (which is not included here at SermonAudio), Dr. Burkett observes that Biblical teaching does in fact promote spiritual growth (and not merely make for "smarter" Christians) when the following is true of it:

(1) It is Bible-based (meaning that the pastor teaches not merely things that are true as such, but that are actually in the Bible; further, that he develops his topics precisely in the manner that the Bible does. Being "tied to the text" is the essence of "rightly dividing the Word.")

(2) It is Spirit-empowered.

(3) It addresses the whole person:

(A) Intellectually, because a renewed mind is at the heart of sanctification.

(B) Volitionally, because we must be doers of the Word, not just hearers of it. This means that Bible teaching must be confrontational and exhortational.

C) Emotionally, because we are more receptive to truth that touches the heart, and truth thus encountered is more memorable and lasting in its impact.
