How Blest the Forgiven Man!

50

David had suffered much emotionally and even physically from living with unconfessed sin. But when he confessed his sin to Yahweh he entered into the joy of not having his sins counted against him; in fact, the text indicates he was considered "righteous" and "godly." Here we see one of the clearest passages in the OT presenting the doctrine of justification by faith by the gracious mercy of God to undeserving sinners. Paul zeroed in on this and used this text, particularly verses 1 and 2 of Psalm 32, in his argument in Romans 4 as he expounds on this doctrine that was so key to the Reformers such as Martin Luther. Walking as a forgiven man David also received Yahweh's deliverance in times of trouble, as well as Yahweh's instruction and guidance. No wonder he was so glad that he shouted for joy. We believers in Christ join him and the apostle Paul as justified, forgiven sinners!
