A Picture of the Lord's Supper

179

After Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, his family - Mary and Martha - held a dinner in Jesus' honor. Lazarus was seated at the table with Jesus.

It was at this dinner that Mary annointed the Savior with the precious ointment, and Judas Iscariot scoffed at her extravagance.

Surely Lazarus must have felt deep gratefulness and affection toward the Lord Jesus - He had raised him from the grave!

Mary's heart was full of love and worship toward her Savior - He had raised her dear brother from the grave! How much she wanted to perform an act of worship and thanksgiving of great cost to honor her Lord!

And there was the critic, Judas. He hated Mary's honor for the Savior. His sin had so blinded him, that he didn't believe the Lord was worthy to receive such extravagant praise. What he wanted from Jesus was power and money - and when Jesus would rather give to those who trusted Him eternal life and cleansing from the guilt of sin, that was of no value to Judas. So he went out in disgust and betrayed our Lord.

This incident is a beautiful picture of the Lord's Supper. It is a feast to honor and remember our blessed Savior, and how He died at Calvary to save us from judgment.

Christ is the guest of honor at this table. But who are those who sit with Jesus at this blessed feast? Why, all the ones whom He has redeemed and given life eternal! We are the Lazaruses who sit at the table with Jesus!

And who is the Mary figure? Hopefully all the Saints, whose hearts ought to break with love for Jesus, and desire to sing His praise and worship and glorify His name in some extravagant way!

Oh that there would be no Judas present to resent our Savior.
