Christian Liberty and Israel's Example
Sermon 26 in the 1 Corinthians Series

1 Corinthians 10:1-5

Observations from 10:1-13

  1. He is warning the Corinthians from the example of Israel in the wilderness.

  2. Israel in the wilderness was cared for by God – but many of the Israelites did not care about God.

  3. The Corinthians were in danger of falling to the same sins that caused the Israelites to fall in the wilderness. They needed to learn from history.

  4. They must put away their pride and arrogance lest they fall (verse 12)

  5. God will always make a way of escape for His people (verse 13).

Romans 3:1-2

Romans 3:9-12; 3:21-23

II. External Identification with the People of God is not proof of Spiritual Redemption 1b-5

A. Deliverance and Redemption 1b-2

When they were baptized into Moses, they became the people who were led by Moses – who was the servant of God. At the Red Sea, they were initiated into their new life as God's redeemed people.

Baptism identifies us with Christ and shows we have died to sin and self.
We rise to walk in newness of life as God's redeemed people.

B. Bread and Drink 3-4

We are still in the context of Christian Liberty and pagan sacrifices.
The issue of idols and idolatry is still relevant (v.7, 14, 16-17, 20-21)

John 6:26-35 -- Jesus is the bread of life.
