Wise Men (Matthew 2.1-12)

There are three main emphases in the Matthew's account of the wise men.

I. Wisdom: the visitors were wise men (verses 1-2)

A. Wisdom and seeking Christ go together. Wisdom has to do with the application of what we know to how we live.(Proverbs 8.20).

B. True wisdom and God's revelation go together. True science and scripture are not enemies. (Numbers 24.17).

II. Wickedness: Herod appears as a wicked man (verses 3-8)

A. Herod was troubled to hear of wise men seeking Christ.(verse 3).

B. Herod was devious in his dealings with these strangers (verses 4-6)(Micah 5.2)

C. Herod was deceitful in attempting to execute his murderous plan (verses 7-8).

III. Wonder: youngster in Bethlehem deserves most attention

(Isaiah 9.6)

A. The dignity of the Lord Jesus was testified in the heavens. (v. 9).

B. This silent witness to the glory of the Lord Jesus filled these wise men with joy (verse 10).

C. Those who find Christ will adore his as the truly wonderful Messiah. (verse 11a).

D. Those filled with a sense of the wonder of Christ will give of their best to Christ.

Conclusion: (verse 8b) but (verse 12)
