James 5 Part 4: Swear Not

Why do men swear today? Why do people passionately promise that they are going to do what they said they were going to do? Why do men write contracts and sign them, why do men put their hand on the Bible and swear under oath in the courtrooms?
It is because men lie!
We spend a lot of time trying to use words in such a way as to convince others of what we are saying. We may try so hard to prove ourselves right, to make sure we are being believed, and to gain the confidence and agreement of those we speak with. But if our energy was more properly placed in simply being people of our word, to live honestly before the Lord, and do and not do what we said we would do or not do, we would not run foul of this warning. If we bound our consciences to everything we said, before the eyes of, and in the Presence of God, we would never need to swear or promise
