The Spirit of Bondage

Romans 8:11–17

v. 15 starts with “For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again”

What is the context here? What does the FOR mean? Thoughts?

What starts in Chapter 6?

  • Slavery to sin and the struggle with it

The church here at Rome was made up of converted people, true Christians but they were struggling living the Christian Life So what is the spirit of bondage? Thoughts?

  • How do we fall victim to it?
  • We have looked at a number of problems people struggle with. We looked at people who fail to realize doctrine

  • We also looked at the people who get depressed because they just do not believe

  • We’ve also seen the problem with starting well and then loosing focus on the Lord as with Peter last week

An unbiblical view of holiness and its place in our lives. While we must be Holy, Be Holy as I am Holy, we do not live to follow rules. Meaning what is the purpose of the Christian Life? Thoughts?

  • Isn’t this whole idea what Paul is addressing in Colossians 2:16–23
  • Paul warns Timothy in 1 Timothy 4:1–3

The point is all of man’s religions are demonic and deny grace. They make rules and rules for man. Submitting to this is the “spirit of bondage”

What is this spirit of fear? What produces it? Thoughts?

What is the difference between me and an unsaved person?

Christ died for me AND the Holy Spirit dwells within me

What is so important here about being a child of God? Thoughts?
