Born of God: Cannot Practice Sin

23

Sermon Outline:

Introduction

• A Very Important Principle from Luke 7:36-47

• Sin taken Lightly – Christ’s Death an Example, or

• Christ’s Death – A License to Sin (2 Corinthians 12:21)

I. To Practice Sin is to Practice Lawlessness (v. 4)

• Lawlessness (Numbers 15:31; Daniel 9:11; 1 Chronicles 10:13;2 Corinthians 6:14)

• A distinction Must be Made between Lawlessness and the unintentional sin from time to time (1 John 1:9)

II. Two Reasons the True Believer Cannot Practice Sin/Practice Lawlessness (vs. 5-10)

A. Christ was Manifested to Take Away our Sins (v. 5-7; 1 John 2:20; Isaiah 53; John 1:29; Hebrews 9:26)

• Died to Sin to Serve Righteousness (Romans 6:1-14)
• No Sin in Christ/the True Believer Does not Sin (v5b-6; Philippians 1:6; Romans 7:20)
• Let No One Deceive You in Thinking that it is Okay to Practice Sin/Practice Lawlessness (Romans 6:13-14a)

B. Christ was Manifest to Destroy the Works of the Devil (vs. 8-10) – Next Lord’s Day

Conclusion and Application

• Does Christ’s Substitutionary Death to take Away our Sins Give Us Reason to Practice Sin/Lawlessness? Or, Does It Move Us to Not Practice Sin/Lawlessness? [Consider Paul’s rebuke to the Corinthians (2 Corinthians 12:21); the Galatians (5:13); and the Romans (6:1)]
• Walk by Faith in the Righteousness Imputed to Us - the Holy Spirit so Works in the True Believer that he or she Cannot Practice Sin
