Death, deliverance, and devastation

161

We groan when we read in the second part of this chapter of the pride of Hezekiah and what follows. Is this the same king who so clearly trusted in God facing the might of Assyria? We see God's prophet Isaiah bring to the king firstly, a word of impending death; secondly, a word of dramatic deliverance; and, thirdly, a word of eventual devastation. The Lord does not abandon Hezekiah for his folly but makes him see that his life, death, health and possessions are not in his hands. We, so prone still to pride, are no different.
