Genesis 31:36-55

75

Jacob has left his friend and uncle Laban and taken all that belongs to him. They get into a confrontation. Laban accused Jacob of stealing his false idols.


36 ¶ And Jacob was wroth, and chode with Laban: and Jacob answered and said to Laban, What is my trespass? What is my sin, that thou hast so hotly pursued after me? Jacob is mad and wants to tear Laban apart. Laban's daughter stole the idols and is sitting on them, but Laban doesn't check with his daughter.
37 Whereas thou hast searched all my stuff, what hast thou found of all thy household stuff? Set it here before my brethren and thy brethren, that they may judge betwixt us both. Jacob says whatever contraband you found, set it here in front of everyone and let them judge.
38 This twenty years have I been with thee; thy ewes and thy she goats have not cast their young, and the rams of thy flock have I not eaten. Laban, for 20 years I've served you honorably and have not stolen anything. If some animals got tore up under my watch, I replaced it with my own money. It has not cost you anything while I worked for you.
39 That which was torn of beasts I brought not unto thee; I bare the loss of it; of my hand didst thou require it, whether stolen by day, or stolen by night. It didn't matter is something bad happened day or night; I replaced it out of my own pocket.
40 Thus I was; in the day the drought consumed me, and the frost by night; and my sleep departed from mine eyes. Anything that happened under my watch, I took care of it.
41 Thus have I been twenty years in thy house; I served thee fourteen years for thy two daughters, and six years for thy....
