- Many proverbs compare two kinds of people: a person of understanding, and a person lacking sense. No one starts out with understanding; we must gain wisdom. This wisdom is based on the renewal of the mind, which begins at the new birth, and is a lifelong process. What carries our renewal forward is our relationship to God, His Word, and His church. 2) The wise person accumulates true spiritual knowledge, and his words reveal an obvious wisdom that is available to those who will listen. But the foolish person brings ruinous consequences upon himself by his words.
