The Root of Marriage Problems

Adam and Eve's futile efforts to cover their sin themselves rather than coming clean with themselves, God and each other is a pattern that has been replicated in the marriages of their descendants for thousands of years. Since that original sin, no marriage is perfect because every married person brings character flaws into the marriage, and each married person has a measure of blindness to the nature and degree of those flaws. Indeed, if we think of mental illness in terms of a person's being out of touch with reality, we understand that there is a measure of insanity in us all. From the time of the expulsion from the Garden of Eden, the only human being to walk the earth who had complete mental health was the Lord Jesus Christ; only he has lived without sin; only he had a character free from flaws. The beginning of health in a marriage comes when we strip ourselves of our own self-righteous efforts and come to the Lord Jesus for real cleansing from our deeply flawed and sinful selves.
