Hearing and Doing that Saves the Whole person

15

There is such a thing as hearing the word, receiving the word and doing the word that saves the whole person. No Christian should be satisfied with less. When James talks about receiving the implanted word he is not appealing to lost people to receive Christ, important as that is. James was calling upon his readers to accept the demands upon their lives that the Word implanted at regeneration required. Recall the parable of the sower and the various soils: Mark 4:1-18. This website is frequented by those who place high emphasis on preaching--rightly so. James proposes that we must indeed "take heed how you hear" for it has undreamed of consequences. The adjective--swift--used in the phrase "be swift to hear" is really the same word used in Mark 16:8 "quickly" and John 11:28,29 "quickly". It is this kind of disposition that characterizes good hearing. And nothing is quite so timely as a right grasp of what is meant by "the perfect law of liberty". J.A. Motyer's comments on this passage are incisive, lively, and health imparting.
