Haman's Vanity

163

This sermon was preached before the House of Commons on June 15, 1643, just a few days after John Pym presented a formal report of an extraordinary conspiracy against Parliament and the city of London by one of their own, Edmund Waller. Though Waller recanted and was spared, his co-conspirators Richard Challoner and Nathaniel Tomkins would be executed three weeks later. The unsettling discovery of Waller's plot had the potential to further discourage members of the Long Parliament, who were at the time enduring a string of royalist successes in the uncertain days leading up to the First English Civil War. Sedgwick's message, based on biblical truth, is thus timeless, and reminds us (as we face great opposition in the world) to "Keep Calm and Carry On," for Jesus Christ is Lord of all. "Now in the twelfth month (that is the month Adar) on the thirteenth day of the same, when, the King's commandment drew near to be put in execution, in the day that the enemies of the Jews hoped to have power over them (though it was turned to the contrary, that the Jews had rule over them that hated them)."
