Eighth to tenth century

The fifth and sixth trumpets set in train centuries of error and aggression. Consequently, centuries of spiritual decline and external pressure continued.

I. Deterioration within the Church

A. The Scriptural early warning system (Revelation 9.7-11).

B. The eighth century visual aids controversy. Those depicted viewed as intercessors and objects of adoration.

C. God's instituted aids. The water of baptism (Acts 22.14-16). The bread and wine of the Lord's Supper (I Corinthians 11.23-25).

(Note. Further problems included disputes over the Nicene Creed statement that the Holy Spirit proceeded from the Father and the Son)

II. Dangers from without the Church

A. Aggression predicted (Revelation 9.13-21).

B. Aggression experienced. At various times during this period, Islam continued to pose a serious threat.

C. Aggression spiritually ineffective. Despite these solemn judgements the survivors were no better spiritually (Rev. 9.20-21).

III. Defence in the Church

A. The carnal defence is to be shunned (Matthew 16.18). Military evangelism but 2 Corinthians 10.3.

B. The spiritual defence is to be embraced. (2 Corinthians 10.4-5).
