Jephthah's Tragic Vow

At the time of Jephthah the Ammonites were seeking to expand their territory into land that had once been Amorite holdings but had been possessed by Israel for the previous 300 years. Jephthah countered the Ammonite demands by rehearsing the history of the region to indicate that the Israelites had taken only the land that God had given them.
