A Theology of Suffering - Its Purpose

The focus of this third sermon on the subject of suffering is one of the most difficult. How can we say for certain what the purpose of our suffering is? How can we know for certain what the purpose of the suffering of others is? From a practical perspective (and based upon what we have seen already) everyone's suffering is different. It can be inward or outward; it can be for what seems to be clear causes or the cause may seem to be utterly mysterious to us. And it is absolutely certain that we cannot discern the Lord's eternal decree and we should not even attempt to do so lest we be guilty of a sin most presumptuous. So what can we say? The Apostle Paul was very familiar with personal suffering and his perspective and attitude is most enlightening. While it is true that he has a unique place in the life of the church as one of the very few apostles, and that he was called upon to endure more than many, he has a confidence that shows the answer to the question of purpose. The text today in II Corinthians is where we find a good example of it. – Pastor Schlegel
