Grace and Law

34

We saw last week that the Law of God is of perpetual validity. The words of Jesus in his Sermon on the Mount do not allow us to be dismissive or indifferent toward the OT or toward any part of it. Jesus is emphatic that he did NOT come to abolish/loosen/dismantle or do away with the Law, but to restore its content, to fill it full again. There is no new ethical demand in the Gospel that is not common to the OT. Divine holiness and human holiness meet in the Law of God. Indeed, human righteousness can only be defined in terms of divine Law. Are Law and Gospel enemies, or does law serve the purposes of grace to work together to make us perfect as our heavenly Father is perfect? That's what we want to consider today.
