Thomas Manton was a Presbyterian minister who was appointed chaplain to both Cromwell and Charles II. Manton stood by Christopher Love as he was beheaded in 1651, and preached Love’s funeral sermon at some risk to his own personal safety. He suffered alongside his nonconformist brethren in the Great Ejection, and was jailed for several months in 1670. The present text is from a series of eighteen sermons on the end times. It is typical of Manton’s direct, concise style and easily manifests his keen, practical insight. This timely treatise addresses the sad tendency of Christians to disbelieve our Saviour when he told us plainly, that no man would have special insight regarding the timing of His glorious return (Matthew 24:36)—ed.
