#15 Unity and Love

13

What is love? Lots of people say lots of things about love. But the real question, the only question that matters, is what does the Bible say about love. Some people would say God is love. That's a direct quote from Scripture. 1 John 4:8. But, by itself, does that really help us to understand love? The Bible uses 4 different words for love, Eros, Phileo, Storge, and Agape. It covers a variety of uses. The reason defining love is important is because if you don't love God rightly, you can't love others rightly. Christian love, divine love, true love is the affectionate pursuit of someone's well-being. It is the willingness to sacrifice anything and everything for the loved one's well being. Love is an action producing noun that necessarily takes into account the affections of the heart. One of the difficulties in discussing love is that people deceive themselves into thinking that they are a loving person. Very rarely, if ever, will you come across someone who will admit that they aren't a loving persons. If you claim you love someone, how you spend your resources, time, treasures, talents and temple, will reflect that.
