- the Bible often uses “links” and “contrasts” to convey its message
- we find such links and contrasts in Hebrews 10:39
- SHRINKING BACK UNTO DESTRUCTION
“destruction” – often translated “perdition” and it means total loss!
- so it really means “hell”, final loss, the most painful loss of all!
“shrink back” – it’s simply the opposite of perseverance! - note v. 36-38 - hence the “exhortation passages” in Hebrews, such as 10:21-25
- how does it happen? – it’s seldom sudden! – rather a gradual fading away
- BELIEVING UNTO PRESERVATION
“those who believe” – ie the opposite of “shrinking back”!
- believing is no mere activity of the mind – it’s spiritual life going forward!
- illustrated in ch.11! - eg count the “action” words in v.24-28!
“preservation” – this is not the usual word for salvation by God - it means “to preserve/keep safe” - so it’s actually what we must do!
- we are to “look after” the whole of life, “keep it safe” - similar Luke 21:19
