Lips and Hearts

Today's text deals a lot with washing and traditions. Is Jesus saying that these things are always bad? Or is there something else going on here? God wants people that do not only pay "lip service" and have the format down just right, but wants people's hearts near him. Through Jesus were are cleansed internally.
