As We Forgive Our Debtors

"Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors." The second half of that petition is terrifying. Do we really want God to forgive us AS we forgive our debtors? Jesus taught us to pray this way, and so we should. He didn't teach us to pray this way to suggest that we enter eternal life by the practice of faithful forgiveness, but rather as a basis for self-examination. Am I forgiving those who sin against me or am I stewing in bitterness and unforgiveness? If the latter, I prove myself a hypocrite and show that the grace and love of God does not dwell in my heart.
