Charity, in Respect of Other Men's Sins John Howe (1630–1705) John Howe was a Presbyterian Puritan pastor who briefly (and reluctantly) served as chaplain to Oliver Cromwell. The following sermon, though 'tough sledding' at the outset because of its lofty, Edwardsesque prose, will reward its careful reader. It is best read slowly and with contemplation. In it the author shows that giving others the benefit of the doubt, and not rejoicing over their failings, are often-lacking (but much needed) virtues among God's people. It is taken from volume 2 of his Works. "Rejoiceth not in iniquity." 1 Corinthians 13:6
